Madeira is an island shaped by extremes: steep terrain, volcanic soil and shifting microclimates. Based in Funchal, the island's capital, Blandy's Madeira has crafted exceptional wines since 1811, across seven generations, playing a central role in preserving and advancing Madeira's unique winemaking traditions. The Blandy family remains the only founding Madeira wine house still owned and managed by its original lineage.
Blandy's continue to produce wines from the island's principal grape varieties: Bual, Malvasia and the exceptionally rare Terrantez. At the heart of their tradition is the canteiro ageing process, in which wines mature slowly in oak casks exposed to the island's natural warmth. Canteiro refers to the wooden beams on which the casks rest, racked at different levels within the ageing rooms - the higher the rack, the warmer it gets. One of the winemaker's skills is balancing those maturation fluctuations, moving casks between levels at the right moments in the cycle. This slow, natural process develops flavours of caramelised sugars, dried fruits and gentle spice, whilst preserving the wine's freshness and structure.
The Madeira Cask Edition is the fourth and final edition in the Dalmore Cask Curation Series. Celebrating The Dalmore's partnership with Blandy's Madeira, the release brings together three rare Madeira pipes (otherwise known as casks), each around 80 years old, hand-selected to finish three Dalmore single malts of different ages:
Bottle No. 1: 30-year-old Dalmore Single Malt, cask finished in a 2010 Terrantez Madeira wine pipe
Bottle No. 2: 34-year-old Dalmore Single Malt, cask finished in a 2018 Bual Madeira wine pipe
Bottle No. 3: 45-year-old Dalmore Single Malt, cask finished in a 2012 Malvasia Madeira wine pipe
Designed by Burgess Studio, each bottle features a solid silver stopper and collar, inlaid with foiled Saffiano leather. The trio is presented in a round travel case, crafted by Italian luggage makers in 'Madeira Wine Tan' Saffiano leather, complete with a matching handle and a luggage tag detailing the whisky. The case serves as both a carry case and a display plinth. An accompanying book tells the story of the partnership, while miniature tasting kits - replica cases holding three 5cl bottles - provide a preview for press and collectors.
