Capsule is a knowing observation that Laphroaig smells like medicine. The Powerful iodine nose of the whisky (reminiscent of TCP) is so pronounced that it’s claimed the distillery managed to continue exporting to the USA during the prohibition era, via a loophole in the law; whisky used for medicinal purposes was exempt. Housed in a capsule of Laphroaig green glass with a plated solid brass cap, the whisky is 40 years old (the joint oldest ever release from the distillery). Matured in Oloroso sherry seasoned hogsheads and ex-bourbon American oak hogsheads for 25 years, before being vatted together in hogsheads for a further 15 years and finally bottled at an impressive 46.5% abv.
